When deciding whether to use floss or interproximal cleaning aids (e.g. Piksters) there are a few things to consider.
First and foremost is - "Will the Pikster fit where I want to clean?" Piksters come in sizes from the smallest size 0 to the largest size 9. As a guide, you should chose the biggest Pikster that will comfortably fit between your teeth. For some people, even the smallest size 0 will not fit between their teeth, as their teeth are very tightly spaced. For these people, floss will be needed. This is often the case for people who have crowding (especially down between the bottom front teeth). For other people, especially those with gum disease, as our gums recede the gaps between the teeth tend to open up slightly. This is when Piksters will start to fit more comfortably.
Secondly, some people with diminished manual dexterity will find Piksters much easier to handle than conventional floss.
Either way, floss or Piksters should be used once daily to keep your teeth clean and your dentist happy! If you are unsure which to use, Dr David Vickers and Dr Tim Clark are happy to assist you and help determine which size of Piksters or floss works best for you.
